Through generous support from our donors, SOS Children’s Village BC has been able to provide special resources and support services to the children and foster parents who reside at the Village site.
SOS BC provides continuity and a sense of belonging by providing a community where children have the opportunity to build relationships with other children and adults, and to develop talents and skills through the participation in a host of activities and programs.
We aspire to enrich the life of every child who comes into an SOS supported home through the following services:
LIFE SKILL DEVELOPMENT: Everyday life can present enormous difficulties for foster children to overcome. Life skills are the skills kids need to learn in order to navigate successfully through life.
Life skills fall into three core categories:
- Social or interpersonal skills
- Cognitive skills such as problem solving, critical thinking
- Emotional coping skills
At SOS BC we assist with the development of these skills through the provision of community projects and events, access to therapy, circle groups, specialized camp experiences, sports, arts, music, and recreation opportunities.
LITERACY: Poor academic achievement as a result of development delays and trauma, can contribute to acting out behaviours and delinquency. Integrated literacy instruction through Oxford Learning Centre contributes to competency and greater educational proficiency.
CULTURAL PROGRAMS: SOS BC honours the First Nations children and youth we serve by engaging them in whatever way we can to their culture. These children and youth are entitled to resources that are responsive to their needs and the unique cultural context of their experience.
At SOS BC we believe that the role of culture (including traditions, spirituality and social customs) facilitates the healing of First Nations children. We seek council from Aboriginal persons, elders and professionals who are available to us for direction and involvement as we work together in reclaiming the health of the Aboriginal children and families we work with.
Lifeskill Development Up Close: Art Therapy
An interview with Frauke Reddick, one of the art
therapists at SOS BC. She explains what art therapy
is and how it helps foster children supported by the
Family Continuance Program to process negative
emotions in an acceptable and positive way. She also
talks about the wonderful mural all the children
in the Village worked together to paint.
Neurofeedback Therapy Explained
This is a fascinating demonstration of a high-tech,
emerging therapy called Neurofeedback, which SOS BC
has had great results with. This technique is used to
help foster children that suffer from behavourial, sleep
and brain disorders by teaching the brain to function
better.
